Common Muscular weaknesses in runners


I find the most common weaknesses in runners are 2 main muscles. Glute med and VMO


The gluteus medius (glute med)


Glute Med

The gluteus medius (glute med) is a deep, fan-shaped muscle located on the side of the hip, extending from the pelvis to the femur. It's crucial for hip stability, especially during single-leg stance like walking, running, and standing. Weakness in the glute med can lead to various issues, including pelvic instability, lower back pain, and knee problems. strengthening this muscle is extremely important for all runners.




onto The 2nd most important muscle to strengthen for all runners.


Vastus Medialis Oblique


Vastus Medialis

this muscle is located on the inside of the thigh, above the kneecap, and is part of the quadriceps muscle group. It plays a crucial role in knee stability, particularly in controlling the movement of the kneecap (patella) and preventing injury. 


A fantastic exercise to strengthen both these muscles together is a Bulgarian split squat.

Split squats

The Bulgarian split squat is a unilateral exercise where one leg is elevated on a bench or a similar platform behind the body, while the other leg performs a squatting motion. It's a challenging exercise that targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes, while also improving balance and core strength.
